An open-ended brief and a fast turnaround challenged us to find creative and out-of-the-box solutions for the soundscape opening to the 2022 Schools Spectacular, a show seen by hundreds of thousands nationally.

The final result featured a unique blend of nervous breathing, heartbeats and manipulated vocal warm-ups, focusing the piece around performance, overcoming nerves and creative expression — the emotional core of Schools Spectacular.

Warped and dramatic samples were layered with synthesizer drones, orchestral textures and traditional sound design elements like risers, booms and subdrops to create an opening that grabbed attention from the first note.

At the start of the pandemic, orchestras were left scrambling to create high-quality digital content for audiences during lockdown, when live performance was impossible. Our apex isolation project became an example of what was possible in that unique and demanding moment.

Moonvault worked with Ensemble Apex and director Sam Weller to help pioneer a new genre of performance that quickly became the norm during the Australian lockdowns.

Thanks to a quick turnaround and a willingness to experiment, many of the techniques, strategies and production concepts developed for this piece were later adopted by other Australian orchestras in their covid-era offerings.

mighty convoy.

Mighty Convoy, a UK-based charity delivering medical aid to Ukraine, asked us to share their message and call to action with the world for the first time.

The production came with tight spatial and time limitations aboard the convoy itself, which meant the storytelling had to be built with a minimal kit, quick decisions and a strong sense of what mattered most.

The result was a stripped-back but emotionally direct film designed to honour the urgency of the mission while making the human stakes clear.
